Rokitamycin

From WikiMD's Wellnesspedia

Rokitamycin is a macrolide antibiotic that is used in the treatment of various bacterial infections. It is derived from Streptomyces and is particularly effective against Gram-positive bacteria. Rokitamycin is not commonly used in the United States, but is more frequently prescribed in Europe and Asia.

Mechanism of Action[edit | edit source]

Rokitamycin works by inhibiting protein synthesis in bacteria, thereby preventing their growth and reproduction. It binds to the 50S ribosomal subunit, which is a part of the bacterial ribosome, and interferes with the translocation of peptides.

Medical Uses[edit | edit source]

Rokitamycin is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections, including respiratory tract infections, skin infections, and sexually transmitted infections. It is also used in the treatment of Helicobacter pylori, a bacterium that can cause stomach ulcers and gastritis.

Side Effects[edit | edit source]

Like all antibiotics, Rokitamycin can cause side effects. The most common side effects are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. In rare cases, it can cause serious side effects like jaundice, hepatitis, and anaphylaxis.
