Rolicyclidine

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Rolicyclidine (also known as PCPy and PHP) is a dissociative anesthetic drug with hallucinogenic and sedative effects. It is similar in effects to phencyclidine but is slightly less potent and has less stimulant effects. Instead, it is more sedating and has a stronger action at the NMDA receptor than other related drugs such as ketamine, which makes it of interest for neuropharmacological research.

History[edit | edit source]

Rolicyclidine was developed in the 1950s and 1960s along with a number of other related drugs such as phencyclidine and ketamine, all of which were initially investigated for use as anesthetic agents due to their ability to induce a state of dissociative anesthesia. However, due to their high potential for abuse and their strong hallucinogenic effects, these drugs were largely withdrawn from medical use. Rolicyclidine was never widely used for medical purposes, although it was briefly tested in humans under the code name PHP.

Pharmacology[edit | edit source]

Rolicyclidine acts as an NMDA receptor antagonist. The NMDA receptor is a subtype of glutamate receptor. Glutamate is the brain's primary excitatory neurotransmitter and plays a key role in learning and memory. By blocking the action of glutamate at the NMDA receptor, rolicyclidine produces a wide range of effects, including anesthesia, analgesia, and hallucinations.

Effects[edit | edit source]

The effects of rolicyclidine are similar to those of other dissociative drugs such as ketamine and phencyclidine. These effects include a sense of detachment from one's physical body and the external world, changes in perception, and distortions of time and space. At higher doses, rolicyclidine can cause more severe effects such as confusion, hallucinations, and psychosis.

Legal status[edit | edit source]

Rolicyclidine is classified as a Schedule I controlled substance in the United States, meaning it has a high potential for abuse and no accepted medical use.
