- Rowan County is a county located in the U.S. state of North Carolina. As of the 2010 census, the population was 138,428. Its county seat is Salisbury. Rowan County was originally formed in 1753 from Anson County, and was named for Matthew Rowan, then acting governor of North Carolina.
