It was established in 1965 by combining the former areas of the Metropolitan Borough of Greenwich and the Metropolitan Borough of Woolwich. The borough is named after its historic town of Greenwich, which is notable for its maritime history and as the location of the Prime Meridian, making it a significant landmark for world time and geography.
