Rubidium chloride

From WikiMD's Wellnesspedia

Rubidium chloride is a chemical compound with the formula RbCl. This alkali metal halide salt is white and highly soluble in water.

Properties[edit | edit source]

Rubidium chloride is a white crystalline powder. It is highly soluble in water and slightly soluble in alcohol. The crystal structure of rubidium chloride is similar to that of sodium chloride (NaCl). The rubidium ions are larger than the sodium ions, so the lattice constant of rubidium chloride is larger than that of sodium chloride.

Preparation[edit | edit source]

Rubidium chloride can be prepared by the reaction of rubidium (Rb) with chlorine (Cl). This reaction is highly exothermic, releasing a large amount of energy in the form of heat and light.

Uses[edit | edit source]

Rubidium chloride is used in biochemistry to induce cells to take up DNA. It is also used in the preparation of rubidium metal and as a reagent in analytical chemistry.

Health effects[edit | edit source]

Rubidium chloride is not considered highly toxic, but it can cause side effects such as skin irritation, eye irritation, and respiratory irritation if it is inhaled, ingested, or comes into contact with the skin or eyes.
