From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Rubus is a large and diverse genus of flowering plants in the rose family, Rosaceae, subfamily Rosoideae. It is a genus of around 250 species of flowering plants, commonly known as the bramble or raspberry family.

Description[edit | edit source]

Members of the genus Rubus are typically shrubs or vines that can be evergreen or deciduous. The leaves are usually pinnate or palmate, with 3-7 leaflets. The flowers are typically white or pink, with five petals and numerous stamens. The fruit is a composite of many small drupelets.

Taxonomy[edit | edit source]

The taxonomy of the genus Rubus is complex due to frequent hybridization, apomixis, and polyploidy. The genus is divided into several subgenera, including Rubus, Idaeobatus, Malachobatus, and Chamaebatus.

Distribution and habitat[edit | edit source]

Rubus species are found throughout the world, with a concentration in temperate regions. They are typically found in woodland and hedgerow habitats, and are also common in disturbed areas such as roadsides and agricultural fields.

Uses[edit | edit source]

Many Rubus species are cultivated for their fruit, including the raspberry (Rubus idaeus) and the blackberry (Rubus fruticosus). Some species are also grown as ornamental plants for their attractive flowers and foliage.
