Rubus saxatilis - Niitvälja bog

Rubus saxatilis, commonly known as stone bramble, is a species of bramble in the Rosaceae family, native to northern Europe, northern Asia, and Siberia. It is a perennial plant that thrives in woodland areas, often on moist, fertile soils. This article provides an overview of Rubus saxatilis, including its description, habitat, and uses.

Description[edit | edit source]

Rubus saxatilis is characterized by its slender stems that can grow up to 60 cm tall, with trifoliate leaves that are green and sharply toothed. The plant produces small, white flowers in the late spring and early summer, which give way to its distinctive red, aggregate fruits in late summer. These fruits are edible and have a sweet, slightly tart flavor.

Habitat[edit | edit source]

The stone bramble prefers shaded or semi-shaded areas within deciduous and mixed forests. It is commonly found in damp, rich soils along riverbanks, in forest clearings, and in other moist, wooded areas. Rubus saxatilis has a wide range but is most commonly found in the cooler climates of the northern hemisphere.

Uses[edit | edit source]

While not as widely cultivated as other members of the Rubus genus, such as the blackberry or raspberry, Rubus saxatilis has several uses. The fruit is edible and can be consumed fresh or used in jams, jellies, and desserts. In some regions, the leaves of the stone bramble are used in traditional medicine for their purported health benefits, although scientific evidence supporting these claims is limited.

Conservation[edit | edit source]

Currently, Rubus saxatilis does not face any significant threats and is not listed on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. However, like many wild species, it could be affected by habitat loss and changes in land use. Conservation efforts are important to ensure the continued survival of this and other native plant species.
