Russ & Daughters[edit | edit source]

Russ & Daughters is a renowned appetizing store located in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, New York City. The store has been family-owned and operated since its establishment in 1914 by Joel Russ, a Jewish immigrant from Eastern Europe. Russ & Daughters is known for its high-quality smoked fish, caviar, bagels, and other traditional Jewish foods.

History[edit | edit source]

Joel Russ immigrated to the United States in the early 1900s and started his business by carrying herring barrels on his shoulders. He opened his first store in 1914, which he named "J. Russ International Appetizers". In 1933, he renamed the store "Russ & Daughters" after making his three daughters his partners, making it one of the first businesses in the United States to have "& Daughters" in its name.

Products[edit | edit source]

Russ & Daughters offers a wide range of products, including smoked fish, caviar, bagels, bialys, and other traditional Jewish foods. The store is particularly famous for its lox, sturgeon, and whitefish. All products are prepared using traditional methods and recipes passed down through generations.

Locations[edit | edit source]

In addition to its original store on East Houston Street, Russ & Daughters operates a cafe in the Lower East Side, a shop in the Jewish Museum on the Upper East Side, and a location at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Each location offers a unique experience, but all maintain the same commitment to quality and tradition that has defined Russ & Daughters for over a century.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Russ & Daughters is considered a culinary landmark in New York City. It has been featured in numerous publications and television shows, and has received numerous awards for its contributions to the city's culinary scene. The store is also a significant part of New York's Jewish heritage and continues to play a vital role in the city's cultural and culinary landscape.
