S&W Cafeteria[edit | edit source]

The S&W Cafeteria was a popular chain of cafeterias that originated in the United States. The chain was founded by Frank Sherrill and Fred Webber in 1920, and it quickly gained popularity due to its high-quality food and elegant Art Deco style.

History[edit | edit source]

The first S&W Cafeteria was opened in Greenville, South Carolina. The founders, Sherrill and Webber, aimed to provide a dining experience that was both affordable and high-quality. The chain expanded rapidly throughout the Southeast, with locations in cities such as Charlotte, North Carolina, Knoxville, Tennessee, and Asheville, North Carolina.

Architecture[edit | edit source]

The architecture of the S&W Cafeterias was a significant part of their appeal. Many of the buildings were designed in the Art Deco style, with elaborate detailing and luxurious materials. The Asheville location, for example, is a notable example of Art Deco architecture and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Menu[edit | edit source]

The menu at S&W Cafeteria was varied, offering a range of dishes to cater to different tastes. The food was prepared fresh daily, and the menu included items such as roast beef, fried chicken, and a variety of desserts. The cafeteria also offered a selection of vegetarian and gluten-free options.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Despite the closure of the original S&W Cafeteria chain, the brand has left a lasting legacy. The buildings that housed the cafeterias are often considered architectural landmarks. In some cities, the buildings have been repurposed and continue to serve the community. For example, the Asheville location has been transformed into the S&W Market, a food hall featuring local vendors.
