SNOMED CT

SNOMED CT is a systematically organized computer processable collection of medical terms providing codes, terms, synonyms and definitions used in clinical documentation and reporting. SNOMED CT is considered to be the most comprehensive, multilingual clinical healthcare terminology in the world.

Overview[edit | edit source]

SNOMED CT is owned, maintained and distributed by SNOMED International, a not-for-profit organization that is a part of the International Health Terminology Standards Development Organisation (IHTSDO). SNOMED CT was originally created by the College of American Pathologists (CAP).

Purpose[edit | edit source]

The main purpose of SNOMED CT is to encode the meanings that are used in health information and to support the effective clinical recording of data with the aim of improving patient care. SNOMED CT provides the core general terminology for electronic health records.

Structure[edit | edit source]

SNOMED CT's structure is based on the concept of a Concept Model, which is a structured set of concepts and relationships that provide a common framework that can be used to model the clinical meanings represented by the terminology.

Use[edit | edit source]

SNOMED CT is used in more than fifty countries and has become a standard for health terminology all over the world. It is used in various healthcare settings including primary care, secondary care, and tertiary care.
