Upon her completion in 1907, the SS Marama was immediately put into service on the Trans-Tasman route. The vessel quickly became known for her reliability and comfort, making her a popular choice among travelers.
During World War I, the SS Marama was requisitioned by the New Zealand Government and converted into a hospital ship. She played a crucial role in transporting wounded soldiers from the Gallipoli Campaign and other battlefields back to New Zealand and Australia.
After the war, the SS Marama returned to her original role as a passenger liner. She continued to serve the Trans-Tasman route until her retirement in 1937.
