SS Radaas

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

SS Radaas was a cargo vessel built in 1922 by the Trondhjems mekaniske Værksted in Trondheim, Norway. The ship was initially built for Dampskibsselskabet Norden of Copenhagen, Denmark, but was later sold to Wilh. Wilhelmsen of Tønsberg, Norway in 1934.

History[edit | edit source]

The SS Radaas was a 9,930 gross register tons (GRT) cargo ship. The ship was 460.6 feet (140.4 m) long, with a beam of 58.3 feet (17.8 m) and a depth of 26.7 feet (8.1 m). The ship was powered by a triple-expansion steam engine which had cylinders of 27 inches (69 cm), 44 inches (110 cm) and 73 inches (190 cm) diameter by 48 inches (120 cm) stroke. The engine was built by Trondhjems mekaniske Værksted.

In 1934, the SS Radaas was sold to Wilh. Wilhelmsen, and was renamed Talabot. The ship was used for the Far East trade. During World War II, the Talabot was part of the Malta Convoys, which were a series of Allied supply convoys from the United Kingdom to the island of Malta in the Mediterranean Sea.

On 26 March 1942, the Talabot was severely damaged by German and Italian aircraft while in the Grand Harbour of Malta. Despite efforts to save the ship, it sank on 27 March. The wreck was later raised and scrapped in 1946.
