Samuel D. Gross

Samuel D. Gross (1805–1884) was a prominent American physician, pathologist, surgeon, and medical writer. He is considered one of the most influential figures in American surgery during the 19th century.

Early life and education[edit | edit source]

Gross was born on July 8, 1805, in Easton, Pennsylvania. He attended the University of Pennsylvania where he received his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1828.

Career[edit | edit source]

Gross began his career as a general practitioner in Philadelphia, but soon specialized in surgery. He held professorships at several institutions, including the Louisville Medical Institute and the Jefferson Medical College.

Gross is best known for his two-volume work, A System of Surgery, which was widely used as a textbook in medical schools across the United States and Europe. He also contributed significantly to the field of pathology, particularly in the study of tumors and infections.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Gross's contributions to medicine and surgery have been widely recognized. The American Surgical Association awards the Samuel D. Gross Prize annually in his honor.
