Sandy Cornish (1793–1869) was an African-American farmer, businessman, and civic leader in Key West, Florida. He is best known for his remarkable act of self-mutilation to avoid being re-enslaved, which made him a symbol of resistance and determination in the fight against slavery.

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Sandy Cornish was born into slavery in Maryland in 1793. He was owned by a series of masters before purchasing his own freedom in the 1830s. After gaining his freedom, Cornish moved to Florida and eventually settled in Key West.

Key West and Self-Mutilation[edit | edit source]

In 1842, while transporting goods to market, Cornish was captured by slave catchers who intended to sell him back into slavery. To prevent this, Cornish publicly mutilated himself by cutting his Achilles tendons and maiming his hand, rendering himself unfit for labor and thus worthless to the slave catchers. This act of defiance ensured his freedom and made him a local hero.
