Sanpete County is a county in the U.S. state of Utah. As of the 2020 census, the population was 28,137. The county seat is Manti, and the largest city is Ephraim. The county was created in 1850 and named for the San Pitch River.

Sanpete County was established in 1850 by the Utah Territory legislature. The area was originally inhabited by the San Pitch Utes, a branch of the Ute people. The first Latter-day Saints settlers arrived in the area in 1849, led by Isaac Morley.
Geography[edit | edit source]
According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,603 square miles (4,150 km²), of which 1,590 square miles (4,100 km²) is land and 13 square miles (34 km²) (0.8%) is water. The county is located in the central part of the state and is part of the Wasatch Plateau.
Demographics[edit | edit source]
As of the 2020 census, there were 28,137 people, 8,000 households, and 6,000 families residing in the county. The population density was 17.7 people per square mile (6.8/km²). The racial makeup of the county was predominantly White, with small percentages of other races.

The economy of Sanpete County is primarily based on agriculture, education, and small manufacturing. Snow College in Ephraim is a significant employer and educational institution in the county.
