Sapan Desai is an American physician and researcher known for his work in the field of vascular surgery and for founding the Surgisphere Corporation. He gained significant attention in 2020 due to controversies surrounding data provided by Surgisphere for studies on COVID-19 treatments.

Sapan Desai was born in the United States. He pursued his undergraduate studies in biomedical engineering at Northwestern University. Desai then attended medical school at the University of Illinois College of Medicine, where he earned his MD. He also holds a PhD in biomedical informatics and a MBA.

Desai completed his residency in vascular surgery and subsequently worked as a surgeon. He has been involved in various research projects and has published numerous articles in medical journals. Desai is particularly interested in the application of artificial intelligence and big data in healthcare.

In 2008, Desai founded the Surgisphere Corporation, a healthcare analytics company. The company claimed to have developed a large, international database of healthcare records, which it used to provide data for research studies.

In 2020, Surgisphere was involved in a major controversy when data it provided was used in studies published in prominent medical journals, including The Lancet and The New England Journal of Medicine. These studies examined the effects of hydroxychloroquine and other drugs on COVID-19 patients.
