Sarah Gilbert

Sarah Gilbert is a British vaccinologist known for her work on the Oxford–AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine. She is a Professor of Vaccinology at the University of Oxford and a co-founder of Vaccitech.

Early life and education[edit | edit source]

Gilbert was born in Kettering, Northamptonshire. She studied Biology at the University of East Anglia and graduated in 1985. She then completed her doctoral degree in Biochemistry at the University of Hull in 1990.

Career[edit | edit source]

In 1994, Gilbert joined the Nuffield Department of Medicine (NDM) at the University of Oxford. Her research has been focused on the development of vaccines against influenza and emerging viral pathogens.

In 2020, Gilbert led the team that developed the Oxford–AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine. The vaccine was approved for use in the UK in December 2020 and has since been used in many countries worldwide.

Awards and honours[edit | edit source]

Gilbert was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2021 New Year Honours for services to Science and Public Health. She was also awarded the Albert Medal by the Royal Society of Arts for her work on the vaccine.
