Sarolaner

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Sarolaner is an insecticide and acaricide that belongs to the isoxazoline group. It is used in veterinary medicine to treat and prevent flea and tick infestations in dogs.

Etymology[edit | edit source]

The term "Sarolaner" is derived from the chemical name "4-[5-(5S)-5-(3,5-Dichloro-4-fluorophenyl)-5-(trifluoromethyl)-4,5-dihydroisoxazol-3-yl]-2-methyl-N-[2-oxo-2-(2,2,2-trifluoroethylamino)ethyl]benzamide".

Pharmacology[edit | edit source]

Sarolaner is an ectoparasiticide, meaning it kills external parasites. It works by inhibiting the function of the neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptor and glutamate receptor. This leads to uncontrolled nerve activity in parasites, causing their death.

Usage[edit | edit source]

Sarolaner is used in the form of chewable tablets for dogs, under the brand name Simparica. It is effective against fleas, ticks, and mites, and can also be used to treat mange and ear mite infestations.

Safety[edit | edit source]

Sarolaner is generally safe for use in dogs. However, it should not be used in dogs with a known hypersensitivity to isoxazoline class compounds. Side effects may include vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, and lethargy.
