Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) is one of India's Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF). It is under the administrative control of the Ministry of Home Affairs. The SSB was originally set up in 1963, following the Indo-China War of 1962, to strengthen India's border security. Initially named the Special Service Bureau, it was later renamed Sashastra Seema Bal in 2001.

History[edit | edit source]

The SSB was established on 20 December 1963, with the primary objective of providing armed support to the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) for covert operations and to counter the influence of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) along the border. The force was restructured and renamed as Sashastra Seema Bal in 2001, with a new mandate to guard India's borders with Nepal and Bhutan.

Roles and Responsibilities[edit | edit source]

The primary role of the SSB is to guard the Indo-Nepal and Indo-Bhutan borders. The force is also tasked with preventing trans-border crimes, smuggling, and other illegal activities. Additionally, the SSB is involved in counter-insurgency operations and internal security duties.

Organizational Structure[edit | edit source]

The SSB is headed by a Director General (DG), who is an officer of the Indian Police Service (IPS). The force is divided into various Frontiers, each headed by an Inspector General (IG). Each Frontier is further divided into sectors, battalions, and companies.

Training[edit | edit source]

The SSB has several training institutions, including the SSB Academy in Bhopal, where new recruits undergo rigorous training in various aspects of border management, counter-insurgency, and internal security.

Operations[edit | edit source]

The SSB has been involved in various operations, including anti-smuggling drives, rescue and relief operations during natural disasters, and counter-insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir and the North-Eastern states of India.

Uniform and Insignia[edit | edit source]

The SSB personnel wear olive green uniforms with distinctive insignia. The force's emblem features crossed swords and a shield, symbolizing strength and protection.
