Sata (food)

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Sata is a traditional Malaysian dish, primarily popular in the Terengganu and Kelantan states of the country. It is a type of fish cake that is wrapped in banana leaf before being cooked.

Preparation[edit | edit source]

The main ingredient of Sata is fish meat, which is finely ground and mixed with coconut milk, onion, ginger, chili and salt. The mixture is then wrapped in banana leaf in a triangular or conical shape and secured with a toothpick. The wrapped packets are then grilled over a charcoal fire until the banana leaf becomes brown and crispy. The grilling process imparts a smoky flavor to the fish cake.

Consumption[edit | edit source]

Sata is typically consumed as a snack or side dish. It is often served with rice and other dishes as part of a traditional Malaysian meal. It can also be eaten on its own, often accompanied by a spicy sambal sauce.

Cultural Significance[edit | edit source]

Sata is a significant part of the culinary culture in Terengganu and Kelantan. It is often prepared for special occasions and festivals, and is a popular street food in these regions. The dish is also gaining popularity in other parts of Malaysia.
