Scalp pruritus

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Scalp pruritus is a common condition characterized by an unpleasant sensation of the skin that provokes the desire to scratch. It is more commonly known as itching of the scalp.

Causes[edit | edit source]

Scalp pruritus can be caused by a variety of conditions, including dandruff, dry skin, seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, and lice. Other causes can include allergic reactions to hair products or an overgrowth of a yeast-like fungus called Malassezia.

Symptoms[edit | edit source]

The main symptom of scalp pruritus is an intense itch that can be localized to certain areas of the scalp or affect the entire scalp. Other symptoms can include redness, swelling, flaking skin, and a burning sensation. In severe cases, scratching can lead to hair loss and skin infections.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

Treatment for scalp pruritus depends on the underlying cause. Over-the-counter treatments include antihistamines, corticosteroids, and medicated shampoos. Prescription treatments can include topical steroids, antifungal medications, and light therapy. In some cases, a dermatologist may recommend a scalp biopsy to determine the cause of the itching.

Prevention[edit | edit source]

Prevention strategies for scalp pruritus can include avoiding known allergens, using gentle hair products, and maintaining a healthy scalp by washing regularly and eating a balanced diet.
