Sebaceous glands

Sebaceous glands are small oil-producing glands present in the skin of mammals. They are part of the integumentary system, the organ system that protects the body from various kinds of damage.

Anatomy[edit | edit source]

Sebaceous glands are usually attached to hair follicles and are found throughout the body, except on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. They are most abundant on the face and scalp. Each gland is composed of an outer layer of cells that secrete a mixture of lipids, called sebum, into a central duct.

Function[edit | edit source]

The primary function of sebaceous glands is to produce and release sebum. Sebum is a complex mixture of lipids that coats, moisturizes, and protects the skin and hair. It also has antimicrobial properties, which can help protect the skin from harmful bacteria and fungi.

Clinical significance[edit | edit source]

Sebaceous glands can become overactive or blocked, leading to various skin conditions. Overactive sebaceous glands can lead to excessive oiliness of the skin and hair, while blocked glands can result in acne, sebaceous cysts, or seborrheic dermatitis.
