Selenium disulfide

Selenium disulfide is an inorganic compound often used in medicinal applications, particularly in the treatment of seborrhoeic dermatitis and dandruff. It is a bright orange solid that is insoluble in water but soluble in carbon disulfide.

Selenium disulfide consists of 8-membered rings, similar to its lighter congener sulfur. It is a bright orange solid that is insoluble in water but soluble in carbon disulfide. It is a component of anti-dandruff shampoos, which work by reducing the scalp oil (sebum) production.

Medical Uses[edit | edit source]

Selenium disulfide is used in medicinal shampoos to treat seborrhoeic dermatitis and dandruff. It works by slowing the growth of yeast that causes these conditions. It is also used to treat tinea versicolor, a fungal infection of the skin.

Side Effects[edit | edit source]

Possible side effects of selenium disulfide include skin irritation, dryness, oiliness or discoloration of the hair, and an increase in normal hair loss. In rare cases, it can cause a rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, or trouble breathing.

Precautions[edit | edit source]

Before using selenium disulfide, inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems.

Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and nonprescription/herbal products you may use. Keep a list of all your medications with you, and share the list with your doctor and pharmacist.

Overdose[edit | edit source]

If someone has overdosed and has serious symptoms such as passing out or trouble breathing, call emergency services. Otherwise, call a poison control center right away.
