Selimiye Barracks (Turkish: Selimiye Kışlası) is a historic military barracks located in the Üsküdar district of Istanbul, Turkey. The barracks are notable for their architectural significance and historical importance, particularly during the Crimean War.

History[edit | edit source]

The Selimiye Barracks were commissioned by Sultan Selim III in 1800 and completed in 1807. The barracks were initially constructed to house the newly formed Nizam-ı Cedid army, part of Selim III's military reforms aimed at modernizing the Ottoman Army. The original wooden structure was destroyed by fire in 1808 and subsequently rebuilt in stone by Sultan Mahmud II in 1825.

During the Crimean War (1853-1856), the Selimiye Barracks gained international recognition as the site where Florence Nightingale established her pioneering nursing practices. Nightingale and her team of nurses significantly improved the conditions and care for wounded soldiers, laying the foundation for modern nursing.

Architecture[edit | edit source]

The Selimiye Barracks are an example of Ottoman architecture with European influences. The complex consists of four main buildings arranged around a central courtyard. The barracks feature a symmetrical design with a central tower, which was used as a watchtower. The buildings are characterized by their large windows, high ceilings, and robust stone construction.

Current Use[edit | edit source]

Today, the Selimiye Barracks continue to serve as a military installation for the Turkish Armed Forces. Part of the complex has been converted into a museum dedicated to Florence Nightingale, showcasing her contributions to nursing and the history of the Crimean War.

Florence Nightingale Museum[edit | edit source]

The Florence Nightingale Museum within the Selimiye Barracks houses a collection of artifacts, documents, and personal items related to Nightingale's work. The museum is open to the public and serves as an educational resource on the history of nursing and military medicine.
