Purpose | Detect parathyroid adenomas |
Test of | Parathyroid gland |
The Sestamibi Parathyroid Scan is a diagnostic test used to locate parathyroid adenomas. It uses a radioactive tracer, Technetium (99mTc) sestamibi, which is absorbed by overactive parathyroid glands more than normal glands.
Procedure[edit | edit source]
The patient is injected with the radioactive tracer. Images are then taken at different time intervals to see how quickly the tracer washes out of the glands.
Uses[edit | edit source]
This scan is primarily used to locate parathyroid adenomas before surgery. It can also be used to confirm a diagnosis of hyperparathyroidism.
Risks[edit | edit source]
As with any procedure involving radioactive material, there is a small risk of radiation exposure. However, the amount of radiation used in a Sestamibi Parathyroid Scan is minimal and not considered harmful.

This is a very basic example and may need to be expanded upon depending on the level of detail required. The infobox at the top provides a summary of the test, including what it's used for and what it tests. The main body of the article then goes into more detail about the procedure, its uses, and any associated risks.
