Settlement
Settlement is a place where people establish a community. The word can refer to a small number of dwellings such as a village, a large number of dwellings such as a city, or the process of establishing such dwellings. Settlements can be permanent or temporary, and can occur in a variety of environments, from the desert to the arctic.
Types of Settlements[edit | edit source]
There are several types of settlements, including:
- Rural Settlements: These are settlements that are located in non-urban areas. They are typically small and rely on agriculture or other natural resources for their economy.
- Urban Settlements: These are settlements that are located in urban areas. They are typically large and have a diverse economy, including industries such as manufacturing, services, and technology.
- Informal Settlements: These are settlements that are not planned or regulated by the government. They often lack basic services such as water supply and sanitation.
Settlement Process[edit | edit source]
The process of settlement involves several stages, including:
- Exploration: This is the initial stage where people search for a suitable location to establish a settlement.
- Establishment: This is the stage where people build dwellings and other structures, and start to live in the settlement.
- Development: This is the stage where the settlement grows and evolves, often through the addition of more dwellings, the development of an economy, and the establishment of social and political structures.
- Decline or Abandonment: This is the stage where the settlement may decline in population or be abandoned, often due to factors such as environmental changes, economic changes, or social changes.
