Shaft is a term used in various fields, including engineering, anatomy, and geology. In engineering, a shaft is a rotating machine element that transmits power from one part to another, or from a machine which produces power to a machine which absorbs power. In anatomy, a shaft refers to the long, slender part of a long bone between the ends. In geology, a shaft is a vertical or inclined excavation in the earth for extracting minerals.

In the field of engineering, a shaft is a rotating machine element, usually circular in cross section, which is used to transmit power from one part to another, or from a machine which produces power to a machine which absorbs power. The various members such as pulleys and gears are mounted on it.

Anatomy[edit | edit source]

In anatomy, a shaft refers to the long, slender part of a long bone. It is also known as the diaphysis. It is the main, long, cylindrical part of the bone which provides support and is responsible for the major weight bearing of the body.

Geology[edit | edit source]

In geology, a shaft is a vertical or inclined excavation in the earth from which miners extract resources. It is also known as a mine shaft. Shafts can be sunk into the ground for various purposes, including the extraction of ore, coal, or other minerals.
