Shannon Boxx Warmup

Shannon Boxx (born June 29, 1977) is a retired American soccer player who played as a midfielder. She is best known for her time with the United States women's national soccer team (USWNT) and her club career in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL).

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Boxx was born in Fontana, California, and grew up in Torrance, California. She attended South Torrance High School, where she excelled in soccer. Boxx went on to play college soccer at the University of Notre Dame, where she was a standout player for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish women's soccer team.

Club Career[edit | edit source]

Boxx began her professional career in the Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA), playing for the San Diego Spirit and later the New York Power. After the WUSA folded, she played for various teams in the Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) league, including the Los Angeles Sol, Saint Louis Athletica, FC Gold Pride, and magicJack.

In 2013, Boxx joined the Chicago Red Stars in the newly formed National Women's Soccer League (NWSL). She played with the Red Stars until her retirement in 2015.

International Career[edit | edit source]

Boxx made her debut for the United States women's national soccer team in 2003. She quickly became a key player for the team, known for her defensive skills and ability to control the midfield. Boxx represented the United States in four FIFA Women's World Cup tournaments (2003, 2007, 2011, and 2015) and three Olympic Games (2004, 2008, and 2012).

She won three Olympic gold medals (2004, 2008, and 2012) and was part of the team that won the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup.

Personal Life[edit | edit source]

Boxx has been open about her struggles with lupus and Sjogren's syndrome, which she was diagnosed with in 2007. Despite these challenges, she continued to play at the highest level and became an advocate for awareness of these conditions.
