Shaun Ryder (born 23 August 1962) is an English singer, songwriter, and poet. He is best known as the lead vocalist of the bands Happy Mondays and Black Grape. Ryder's work with these bands was influential in the Madchester cultural scene during the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Shaun William George Ryder was born in Little Hulton, Salford, Lancashire, England. He left school at the age of 13 to work on a building site, and later pursued a career in music.

Happy Mondays[edit | edit source]

Happy Mondays was formed in 1980 by Ryder, his brother Paul Ryder, and their friends. The band became a key part of the Madchester movement, blending alternative rock, psychedelic rock, and dance music. Their most successful album, Pills 'n' Thrills and Bellyaches, was released in 1990 and included hits like "Step On" and "Kinky Afro".

Black Grape[edit | edit source]

After the initial split of Happy Mondays in 1993, Ryder formed Black Grape with former Happy Mondays dancer Bez and rapper Kermit. Their debut album, It's Great When You're Straight...Yeah, was released in 1995 and was a commercial success, reaching number one on the UK Albums Chart.

Solo Career and Other Projects[edit | edit source]

Ryder has also pursued a solo career, releasing the album Amateur Night in the Big Top in 2003. He has appeared on various television shows, including I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! in 2010, where he finished as runner-up.

Personal Life[edit | edit source]

Ryder has been open about his struggles with drug addiction and has been in and out of rehabilitation. He has six children from various relationships and is married to Joanne Ryder.

Shaun Ryder is considered a significant figure in British music, particularly for his contributions to the Madchester scene. His work has influenced numerous artists and continues to be celebrated in popular culture.
