Frank Shepard Fairey (born February 15, 1960) is an American contemporary street artist, graphic designer, activist, and illustrator. He first became known for his "Obey Giant" campaign, which developed into a worldwide phenomenon. Fairey is also known for his iconic Hope poster, which became a symbol of Barack Obama's 2008 presidential campaign.

Fairey was born in Charleston, South Carolina. He developed an interest in art at a young age and went on to attend the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Illustration.

Obey Giant[edit | edit source]

Fairey first gained recognition with his "Obey Giant" campaign, which began in 1989. The campaign featured an image of the professional wrestler André the Giant and the word "Obey." The image was initially used as a sticker and later appeared on posters, clothing, and other media. The campaign was intended to provoke curiosity and make people question their surroundings.
