Shirley Ann Manson (born 26 August 1966) is a Scottish singer, songwriter, and actress. She is best known as the lead vocalist of the alternative rock band Garbage. Manson gained media attention for her distinctive voice, rebellious persona, and eclectic fashion sense.
Early Life[edit | edit source]
Shirley Manson was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, to John Mitchell Manson and Muriel Flora Manson. She has two sisters, Lindy-Jayne and Sarah. Manson attended Broughton High School, where she developed an interest in music and drama.

Early Career[edit | edit source]
Manson's music career began in the early 1980s when she joined the band Goodbye Mr. Mackenzie as a backing vocalist and keyboardist. The band achieved moderate success in the UK. In 1993, Manson formed the band Angelfish, which released one album and gained some attention in the United States.
Garbage[edit | edit source]
In 1994, Manson was approached by Butch Vig, Duke Erikson, and Steve Marker to join their new band, Garbage. The band's self-titled debut album was released in 1995 and was a commercial success, spawning hits like "Stupid Girl" and "Only Happy When It Rains". Garbage went on to release several more albums, including Version 2.0 (1998), Beautiful Garbage (2001), and Not Your Kind of People (2012).
Solo Work and Acting[edit | edit source]
In addition to her work with Garbage, Manson has pursued solo projects and acting. She made her acting debut in the second season of the science fiction television series Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles in 2008, playing the role of Catherine Weaver.
Personal Life[edit | edit source]
Manson married Scottish artist Eddie Farrell in 1996, but the couple divorced in 2003. She later married record producer Billy Bush in 2010. Manson is known for her outspoken views on various social and political issues, including feminism and LGBTQ+ rights.
