Sidney Franklin (bullfighter)
Sidney Franklin (born Sidney Frumkin; July 11, 1903 – April 26, 1976) was an American bullfighter who gained fame in the early 20th century. He was one of the first Americans to become a professional bullfighter and achieved significant recognition in Spain and Mexico.
Early Life[edit | edit source]
Sidney Franklin was born in Brooklyn, New York City, to a Jewish family. His birth name was Sidney Frumkin. From a young age, Franklin was fascinated by bullfighting, a passion that was unusual for an American, especially one from a Jewish background.

Franklin moved to Mexico in the 1920s, where he began his training in bullfighting. He later moved to Spain, where he became a professional bullfighter. Franklin was known for his skill and bravery in the ring, and he quickly gained the respect of his peers and the admiration of bullfighting fans.
Franklin's career was marked by several notable achievements. He was the first American to receive the title of matador de toros, the highest rank in bullfighting. He fought in some of the most prestigious bullrings in Spain, including Las Ventas in Madrid and La Maestranza in Seville.

Despite his success in the bullfighting world, Franklin remained a somewhat enigmatic figure. He was known for his modesty and often shunned the limelight. Franklin was also a close friend of the famous writer Ernest Hemingway, who admired his courage and skill. Hemingway wrote about Franklin in his book Death in the Afternoon, which is considered one of the most important works on bullfighting.
