Skin and skin structure infection

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Skin and Skin Structure Infection (SSSI) refers to a variety of infections that can affect the skin and its associated structures, such as the sweat glands, hair follicles, and subcutaneous tissues. These infections can be caused by a variety of bacteria, fungi, and viruses, and can range in severity from minor to life-threatening.

Types of Skin and Skin Structure Infections[edit | edit source]

There are several types of SSSIs, including:

  • Cellulitis: This is a common and serious bacterial skin infection that can spread rapidly. It appears as a swollen, red area of skin that feels hot and tender to the touch.
  • Impetigo: This is a highly contagious skin infection that mainly affects infants and children. It causes red sores that can break open, ooze fluid, and develop a yellow-brown crust.
  • Folliculitis: This is an infection of the hair follicles, the small pouches from which hairs grow. It can occur anywhere on the skin or scalp and is often caused by bacteria or fungi.
  • Abscess: This is a pocket of pus that forms within the body tissue. Skin abscesses are often caused by bacterial infections.

Causes and Risk Factors[edit | edit source]

SSSIs are typically caused by bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus pyogenes, but can also be caused by fungi or viruses. Risk factors for developing an SSSI include having a weakened immune system, poor circulation, diabetes, or a history of skin injuries or surgery.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

Treatment for SSSIs depends on the type and severity of the infection. It may include antibiotics, antifungal or antiviral medications, and in some cases, surgical intervention to drain abscesses or remove infected tissue.

Prevention[edit | edit source]

Prevention of SSSIs involves maintaining good skin hygiene, treating minor skin injuries promptly, and managing underlying health conditions that can increase the risk of infection.
