Smith and Jones is the first episode of the third series of the British science fiction television programme Doctor Who, which was first broadcast on BBC One on 31 March 2007. The episode was written by Russell T Davies and directed by Charles Palmer.

Plot[edit | edit source]

The episode introduces Martha Jones, a medical student who encounters the Tenth Doctor at the hospital where she works. The hospital is transported to the Moon by the Judoon, a race of intergalactic police, who are searching for a fugitive alien. The Doctor and Martha work together to identify the alien, who is disguised as an elderly human woman named Florence Finnegan. Florence is revealed to be a Plasmavore, a blood-sucking alien, who has been hiding from the Judoon by drinking the blood of humans to mimic their biology.

The Doctor allows Florence to drink his blood, which reveals her true nature to the Judoon. The Judoon execute Florence and return the hospital to Earth. The Doctor invites Martha to join him on his travels in the TARDIS.

"Smith and Jones" was the first episode to feature Freema Agyeman as Martha Jones. The episode was filmed in various locations, including the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff. The Judoon were created using a combination of prosthetics and CGI.
