Spider-Man is a fictional superhero appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. Created by writer Stan Lee and artist Steve Ditko, he first appeared in Amazing Fantasy #15 (August 1962). Spider-Man is the alias of Peter Benjamin Parker, an orphan raised by his Aunt May and Uncle Ben in New York City after his parents Richard and Mary Parker were killed in a plane crash. He acquires spider-related abilities after a bite from a radioactive spider; these include clinging to surfaces, superhuman strength and agility, and detecting danger with his "spider-sense." He also constructs web-shooters to shoot spiderweb material.

Publication history[edit | edit source]

Spider-Man's creation and debut were a breakthrough in comics, as he was one of the first teenage superheroes not to be relegated to sidekick status. The character was an instant hit, and his ongoing series, The Amazing Spider-Man, became Marvel's top-selling series. Over the years, Spider-Man has become one of the world's most beloved characters, appearing in multiple series, spin-offs, and adaptations.

Fictional character biography[edit | edit source]

Peter Parker, a high school student living in Queens, New York, attends a science exhibit where he is bitten by a radioactive spider. Shortly after, he discovers he has gained spider-like abilities. Initially seeking fame and fortune by using his powers, a tragic event— the murder of his Uncle Ben— teaches Peter that "with great power comes great responsibility." From that moment, Peter uses his powers to fight crime as Spider-Man.

Powers and abilities[edit | edit source]

Spider-Man possesses superhuman strength, speed, durability, and agility. He has the ability to adhere to walls and ceilings, a precognitive "spider-sense" that alerts him to danger, and is an expert in hand-to-hand combat. His web-shooters allow him to shoot spiderweb material, which he uses to swing from buildings, create nets to capture enemies, and make various gadgets.

Supporting characters[edit | edit source]

Spider-Man's supporting cast includes his Aunt May, his love interests Gwen Stacy and Mary Jane Watson, and his best friend Harry Osborn. He has a wide range of enemies, including the Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, the Vulture, and the Sandman.

Cultural impact[edit | edit source]

Spider-Man has become an iconic character, symbolizing the struggles of adolescence and young adulthood. His story has been adapted into several films, television shows, and video games. The character has also appeared in various merchandise, making him one of the most profitable and recognizable characters in the world.
