Spiral CT scan

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Spiral CT scan (also known as helical CT scan) is a type of CT scan that uses a spiral motion to capture images. It is a medical imaging procedure that combines many X-ray images with the aid of a computer to generate cross-sectional views and, if needed, three-dimensional images of the internal organs and structures of the body.

History[edit | edit source]

The spiral CT scan was first introduced in the 1980s. It was developed by Willi A. Kalender, a German scientist, who is considered a pioneer in the field of CT technology. The development of spiral CT scan has significantly improved the speed and quality of CT imaging.

Procedure[edit | edit source]

During a spiral CT scan, the patient lies on a table that moves through a circular opening in the CT scanner. The X-ray tube inside the scanner rotates in a spiral motion around the patient, capturing multiple images from different angles. These images are then processed by a computer to create a detailed, cross-sectional view of the body.

Applications[edit | edit source]

Spiral CT scans are used in various medical fields, including radiology, oncology, and cardiology. They are particularly useful in detecting abnormalities in the chest, abdomen, and pelvis. They can also be used to guide biopsies and other procedures.

Advantages[edit | edit source]

The main advantage of spiral CT scans is their speed. They can capture images much faster than traditional CT scans, reducing the time the patient needs to hold their breath. This makes them particularly useful for examining patients who have difficulty holding their breath, such as children and elderly people.

Risks[edit | edit source]

Like all medical procedures, spiral CT scans carry some risks. The main risk is exposure to radiation. However, the amount of radiation used in a spiral CT scan is generally considered safe for most patients. Other risks include allergic reactions to contrast material and kidney damage in patients with kidney disease.
