St. James Parish, LA St. James Parish, Louisiana is a parish located in the U.S. state of Louisiana. As of the 2020 census, the population was 20,192. The parish seat is Convent. The parish was created in 1807 and is part of the New Orleans metropolitan area.

St. James Parish is one of the original 19 parishes created by the Territory of Orleans in 1807. The area was originally settled by French and Spanish colonists in the 18th century. The parish is named after Saint James the Greater, one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus Christ.
Geography[edit | edit source]
According to the United States Census Bureau, the parish has a total area of 258 square miles (670 km²), of which 246 square miles (640 km²) is land and 12 square miles (31 km²) (4.6%) is water. The parish is bisected by the Mississippi River, which plays a significant role in its economy and culture.
