Stanley Vollant is the first Indigenous surgeon in Quebec, Canada. Born in 1965 in the Innu community of Pessamit, Vollant has been a trailblazer in the field of medicine, advocating for better healthcare for Indigenous peoples and promoting education and wellness within these communities. His journey from a small village to becoming a renowned surgeon is a testament to his dedication, resilience, and passion for making a difference in the world.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Stanley Vollant was born into the Innu community of Pessamit, located on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River in Quebec. From a young age, Vollant was inspired by his grandfather, who was a traditional healer, sparking his interest in medicine and healing. Despite facing the challenges associated with growing up in a remote community, including limited access to educational resources, Vollant excelled academically.
He pursued his higher education at the University of Montreal, where he graduated with a degree in Medicine in 1989. Vollant's academic journey did not stop there; he went on to complete his residency in general surgery at the same university, becoming the first Indigenous surgeon in Quebec in 1994.

One of his notable initiatives is the "Innu Meshkenu" project, which translates to "my Innu path." This initiative encourages Indigenous and non-Indigenous people to walk together, literally and figuratively, to promote physical health, mental wellness, and cultural understanding. The project has organized walks across Quebec and other parts of Canada, fostering community spirit and raising awareness about Indigenous health issues.
In addition to his work in healthcare, Vollant is a passionate educator and mentor. He has held teaching positions at various universities, including the University of Montreal, where he has inspired countless students to pursue careers in medicine and healthcare. Vollant's efforts extend beyond the classroom; he frequently visits Indigenous communities to speak with young people about the importance of education, health, and preserving their cultural heritage.

Dr. Stanley Vollant's contributions to medicine and Indigenous health have not gone unnoticed. He has received numerous awards and honors for his work, including the Order of Canada, one of the country's highest civilian honors.
