Stephen Larigaudelle Dubuisson (1786–1864) was a French-American Jesuit priest who played a significant role in the development of the Catholic Church in the United States during the 19th century. He is known for his contributions to education, pastoral care, and the expansion of the Jesuit order in America.

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Stephen Larigaudelle Dubuisson was born on October 5, 1786, in Saint-Domingue (now Haiti). He was the son of a wealthy French planter. During the Haitian Revolution, his family fled to France, where he received his early education.

Religious Life[edit | edit source]

Dubuisson entered the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) in 1804. He was ordained a priest in 1815. Following his ordination, he was sent to the United States in 1816 to assist in the growing Catholic community.

Contributions in the United States[edit | edit source]

Upon his arrival in the United States, Dubuisson was assigned to various missions. He served as a pastor in Maryland and Washington, D.C., where he was instrumental in establishing several parishes and schools. He was also involved in the founding of Georgetown University and served as its president from 1825 to 1829.

During his tenure as president of Georgetown University, Dubuisson focused on expanding the curriculum and improving the institution's facilities. He is credited with enhancing the university's reputation and laying the groundwork for its future growth.

Pastoral Work[edit | edit source]

In addition to his work in education, Dubuisson was deeply involved in pastoral care. He ministered to the needs of the local Catholic community, providing spiritual guidance and support. His efforts helped to strengthen the Catholic presence in the region.

After many years of service in the United States, Dubuisson returned to France in 1840. He continued his work with the Jesuits until his death on August 14, 1864.
