Steri strip

Steri-Strip is a brand of adhesive bandage used in the medical field to close small wounds, lacerations, and surgical incisions. They are also known as butterfly stitches or wound closure strips. Steri-Strips are made of a non-woven, rayon-backed material coated with a pressure-sensitive, hypoallergenic adhesive. They are designed to provide wound support and increase the tensile strength of the wound, while minimizing scarring and eliminating the need for sutures or staples in certain cases.

Usage[edit | edit source]

Steri-Strips are applied after wound edges have been properly cleaned and disinfected. They are placed across the wound in a manner that gently pulls the edges together, promoting healing and reducing the risk of infection. These strips are breathable, allowing air to circulate over the wound, which aids in healing. They are also water-resistant, though not fully waterproof, making it possible for patients to shower without removing them.

Advantages[edit | edit source]

The use of Steri-Strip for wound closure has several advantages. It is less invasive than suturing or stapling, reducing the risk of infection and minimizing scar formation. The application process is quick and relatively painless, which can be particularly beneficial in pediatric care. Additionally, Steri-Strips can be applied in a variety of settings, not just in hospitals or clinics, making them a versatile tool in both professional and first aid scenarios.

Limitations[edit | edit source]

While Steri-Strips are effective for closing small wounds and incisions, they are not suitable for all types of injuries. Deep wounds, wounds under high tension, or those with jagged edges may require more traditional closure methods such as sutures or staples. Furthermore, Steri-Strips may not adhere well to areas of the body with high mobility or where the skin is oily or sweaty.

Removal[edit | edit source]

Steri-Strips are designed to fall off on their own as the wound heals, typically within 7 to 14 days. If they do not fall off naturally, they can be gently removed by soaking in warm water to loosen the adhesive. Care should be taken not to prematurely remove the strips to avoid reopening the wound.

Conclusion[edit | edit source]

Steri-Strips offer a convenient and effective alternative to sutures and staples for certain types of wound closure. Their ease of use, coupled with the benefits of reduced scarring and infection risk, make them a valuable tool in wound management. However, it is important to assess the suitability of Steri-Strips on a case-by-case basis, considering the nature and location of the wound.
