|Stephen Thompson (born 15 July 1978) is a retired English rugby union player who played as a hooker. He is best known for his time with the England national rugby union team, with whom he won the 2003 Rugby World Cup.

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Thompson was born in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire. He attended Roundwood Park School where he initially played as a flanker before switching to the position of hooker.

Club Career[edit | edit source]

Thompson began his professional career with Northampton Saints in 1998. He played for the club until 2007, making over 170 appearances. In 2007, he announced his retirement due to a neck injury but made a comeback in 2009, joining CA Brive in France. He later played for Leeds Carnegie before retiring for the second time in 2011.

International Career[edit | edit source]

Thompson made his debut for the England national rugby union team in 2002. He was a key member of the squad that won the 2003 Rugby World Cup, playing in the final against Australia. He earned a total of 73 caps for England and scored 10 points.

Post-Retirement[edit | edit source]

After retiring from professional rugby, Thompson has been involved in various activities, including coaching and media work. He has also been an advocate for player welfare, particularly concerning the long-term effects of head injuries in rugby.

Personal Life[edit | edit source]

Thompson is married and has children. He has been open about his struggles with memory loss and other health issues related to his rugby career.
