Sudden death

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Sudden death refers to the abrupt and unexpected cessation of life. It is often associated with cardiac arrest and other cardiovascular diseases, but can also be caused by other conditions such as respiratory failure, stroke, and trauma.

Causes[edit | edit source]

The most common cause of sudden death is cardiovascular disease, particularly coronary artery disease. Other causes include arrhythmia, congenital heart disease, and cardiomyopathy. Non-cardiac causes include respiratory failure, stroke, trauma, drug overdose, and seizure.

Diagnosis[edit | edit source]

Diagnosis of sudden death is typically made post-mortem, through autopsy or medical examination. In some cases, the cause of death can be determined through medical history and circumstances of death.

Prevention[edit | edit source]

Prevention of sudden death involves managing risk factors for cardiovascular disease, such as hypertension, diabetes, and high cholesterol. This can be achieved through lifestyle changes, medication, and in some cases, surgery.
