Sulisobenzone
Sulisobenzone (also known as Benzophenone-4 and Uvinul MS 40) is an organic compound that is commonly used in sunscreen and other cosmetic products to absorb UVB and short-wave UVA (ultraviolet) rays. It is a derivative of benzophenone.
Chemical Properties[edit | edit source]
Sulisobenzone is a pale yellow solid with a slight floral odor. It is soluble in alcohol and oils, but practically insoluble in water. The chemical formula of sulisobenzone is C14H12O6S.
Uses[edit | edit source]
The primary use of sulisobenzone is in sunscreens and other skincare products where it acts as a sunscreen agent to absorb UVB and short-wave UVA rays. It is also used in plastics to prevent UV degradation, and in some types of hair dye.
Safety[edit | edit source]
Sulisobenzone has been approved for use in sunscreens by the FDA in concentrations up to 10%. It is considered safe for use in cosmetics, but can cause allergic reactions in some individuals.
