Stereotaxic atlas is a tool used in neuroscience and neurosurgery to locate specific areas within the brain. It is a three-dimensional coordinate system that allows for precise targeting of regions within the brain. The stereotaxic atlas is often used in conjunction with a stereotaxic apparatus, which is a device that holds the head steady and allows for precise movement in three dimensions.

History[edit | edit source]

The concept of a stereotaxic atlas was first introduced by Horsley and Clarke in 1908. They developed a device that could hold a primate brain steady and allow for precise targeting of specific areas. This early device was the precursor to the modern stereotaxic apparatus and atlas.

Use in Research[edit | edit source]

In neuroscience research, the stereotaxic atlas is used to target specific areas of the brain for study. This can include injecting tracers or neurotransmitters, implanting electrodes for electrophysiology studies, or removing specific areas of the brain for lesion studies.

Use in Surgery[edit | edit source]

In neurosurgery, the stereotaxic atlas is used to target specific areas of the brain for surgical intervention. This can include removing tumors, treating Parkinson's disease with deep brain stimulation, or treating epilepsy with vagus nerve stimulation.

Types of Stereotaxic Atlases[edit | edit source]

There are many different types of stereotaxic atlases available, each designed for a specific species and often for a specific age group. Some of the most commonly used atlases include the Paxinos and Watson rat brain atlas, the Franklin and Paxinos mouse brain atlas, and the Talairach human brain atlas.
