Susan Mackinnon

Susan E. Mackinnon is a pioneering neurosurgeon and researcher in the field of peripheral nerve surgery. She is renowned for her contributions to nerve repair, nerve grafting, and the treatment of peripheral nerve injuries. Mackinnon's work has significantly advanced the understanding and techniques in nerve reconstruction, leading to improved outcomes for patients worldwide. Mackinnon received her medical degree from the University of Saskatchewan in Canada. Following her graduation, she completed her residency in plastic surgery at the University of Toronto. Her interest in peripheral nerve surgery led her to further specialize in this area, and she subsequently undertook fellowship training at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, under the mentorship of renowned microsurgeon Dr. Julio Hochberg. Throughout her career, Mackinnon has been a prolific researcher and innovator. She holds the position of Sydney M. Jr. and Robert H. Shoenberg Professor and is the Chief of the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri. Her research has focused on mechanisms of nerve injury and repair, and she has developed several surgical techniques that have become the standard of care in peripheral nerve surgery. These include the use of autologous nerve grafts, allografts, and conduits for nerve reconstruction, as well as the pioneering technique of nerve transfer, which has restored function to limbs that would otherwise be considered irreparable.
