Svay Rieng

Svay Rieng is one of the 25 provinces of Cambodia. Located in the southeast, it is bordered by Vietnam to the east, Prey Veng Province to the north, and Kampong Cham Province and Kandal Province to the west. The provincial capital is Svay Rieng, while the largest city is Bavet, known for its international border crossing to Vietnam.

The history of Svay Rieng is deeply intertwined with the history of the Khmer Empire and the region as a whole. The province was a significant battleground during the Cambodian–Vietnamese War, with many of its towns and villages severely affected by the conflict.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Svay Rieng is one of the smallest and flattest provinces in Cambodia, with the Mekong River flowing nearby. The province is characterized by a network of waterways, which contribute to the area's fertile soil, making it a productive agricultural region.

The economy of Svay Rieng is primarily based on agriculture, with rice, corn, and fruit being the main crops. The province is also home to several industrial parks, with the Manhattan Special Economic Zone in Bavet being one of the largest. The border town of Bavet also hosts several casinos, catering to Vietnamese tourists.

The culture of Svay Rieng is a blend of traditional Khmer culture and influences from neighboring Vietnam. The province is known for its unique folk dances and music, as well as its traditional cuisine, which includes dishes such as Banh Xeo, a Vietnamese-style crepe.

Education in Svay Rieng is overseen by the provincial Department of Education, Youth, and Sport. The province has several primary and secondary schools, as well as the Svay Rieng University, which offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs.

Transportation[edit | edit source]

Svay Rieng is well-connected by road to other parts of Cambodia and to Vietnam. The province is served by National Highway 1, which runs from Phnom Penh to Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam.
