The McDonald's restaurant in Sydney River, Nova Scotia, was a popular fast-food establishment in the community. On the night of May 7, 1992, three young men, Derek Wood, Darren Muise, and Freeman MacNeil, decided to rob the restaurant after closing hours.

The three perpetrators, who were former or current employees of the restaurant, entered the premises with the intention of robbing the safe. However, the situation quickly escalated when they discovered that the night manager did not have the combination to the safe. In the ensuing violence, three employees were killed and a fourth was left permanently disabled.
