TARMED

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

TARMED is a tariff system used in Switzerland for outpatient medical services. It was introduced in 2004 and is used by all Swiss health insurance companies to calculate the cost of medical services. The name TARMED is an acronym for "Tarif Médical", which translates to "Medical Tariff" in English.

Overview[edit | edit source]

TARMED is a point value system, where each medical service is assigned a certain number of points. The total cost of a medical service is calculated by multiplying the number of points by a point value, which is determined by the health insurance company.

The TARMED tariff system is divided into several sections, each of which covers a different area of medical services. These sections include:

Each section is further divided into chapters, which cover specific medical services. For example, the General Medicine section includes chapters on Consultation, Examination, Treatment, and Prevention.

Criticism[edit | edit source]

The TARMED tariff system has been criticized for being too complex and for not accurately reflecting the actual cost of medical services. In response to these criticisms, the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health has proposed a revision of the TARMED tariff system.
