THIQ

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

THIQ or Tetrahydroisoquinoline is an organic compound that is a structural isomer of tetrahydroquinoline. It is a heterocyclic compound, specifically a derivative of isoquinoline. THIQ is a precursor to a variety of natural products and pharmaceuticals.

Structure and synthesis[edit | edit source]

THIQ is a bicyclic compound that consists of a benzene ring fused to a piperidine ring. The compound is chiral, although it is typically used as a racemate. It is synthesized by the Pictet-Spengler reaction of an amine with a carbonyl compound.

Biological significance[edit | edit source]

THIQs are found in a variety of biological systems. They are a component of many alkaloids, which are naturally occurring organic compounds that contain mostly basic nitrogen atoms. Alkaloids have a wide range of pharmacological effects and are used as medications and recreational drugs.

THIQs are also found in the human brain, where they are believed to play a role in addiction. They are structurally similar to the neurotransmitter dopamine, and are thought to bind to the same receptors in the brain. This may contribute to the addictive properties of certain drugs.
