Anatomy

The seven tarsal bones are the calcaneus, talus, navicular, cuboid, and the three cuneiforms. Each of these bones plays a crucial role in the structure and function of the foot.

Calcaneus

The calcaneus is the largest of the tarsal bones and forms the heel of the foot. It supports the weight of the body and provides an attachment point for muscles and ligaments.

Talus

The talus is the second largest tarsal bone and is located directly above the calcaneus. It plays a crucial role in the foot's ability to move and flex.

Navicular

The navicular is boat-shaped and located in front of the talus. It helps in distributing the body's weight on the foot.

Cuboid

The cuboid is cube-shaped and located in front of the calcaneus. It provides stability to the foot.

Cuneiforms

The three cuneiforms are located in front of the navicular and are named for their wedge shape. They contribute to the foot's arch and help in walking and running.

Function

The tarsal bones, along with the other bones in the foot, play a crucial role in supporting the body's weight and enabling movement. They form the foot's arch, which absorbs shock and distributes weight during movement. The tarsal bones also provide a surface for the attachment of muscles and ligaments, which control the foot's movements.

Clinical Significance

Injuries or disorders affecting the tarsal bones can lead to conditions such as flat feet, clubfoot, and tarsal tunnel syndrome. Treatment for these conditions may involve physical therapy, medication, or surgery.
